After living in Nicaragua for over three years, we finally made it to the Somoto Canon, and it was an experience we didn't regret. The Somoto Canon, situated in the northern part of Nicaragua near the Honduran border, offers a variety of adventure options. There are many activities to choose from, such as 4 or 6-hour canyoning trips or boat tours. We opted for the 6-hour canyoning adventure organized by Somoto Canon Tours.
The staff was very kind, and everything went smoothly. They provided us with sport shoes and life jackets, and guided us to the canyon entrance. We spent our time walking and swimming in the canyon. The water was crystal clear and pleasantly cool, refreshing us without being too cold. There were several spots where we jumped from the rocks, but we always felt safe.
The water excursion lasted about 4 hours, with an additional hour of walking before and after. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at the end of the tour. Afterwards, we visited a nearby thermal hot water pool. If you stay in the area overnight, visiting the thermal pool is definitely a good idea.
The Somoto Canon is about 5 to 5.5 hours from Granada. However, if you travel on a Sunday, you can make the trip in 4 to 4.5 hours due to less traffic. Although it's a long drive, it's truly worth it!
